Golden Rules

For Spouses:

“DO UNTO YOUR SPOUSE AS YOU WOULD HAVE YOUR SPOUSE DO UNTO YOU”

  1. Be respectful and listen to the other side’s concerns
  2. Be truthful, complete and transparent about all financial issues
  3. Try to identify early-on any issues that can easily be agreed to. This can help create a more productive working relationship for later sessions
  4. Communicate fully your hopes and desires for the future to your attorney, coach, psychologist or child specialist so that, as a team, they can proactively help in resolving conflicts
  5. If children are involved, realize that both sides have their best interests at heart and work together toward that end
  6. Be creative in solving problems that arise and compromise where necessary

For Attorneys:

“DO UNTO YOUR COUNTERPART AS YOU WOULD HAVE YOUR COUNTERPART DO UNTO YOU”

  1. Resist any tendencies to employ adversarial tactics that may linger from your experience as a litigator
  2. Disclose relevant information thoroughly and in a timely fashion
  3. Refrain from strategizing with clients in order to gain an advantage
  4. Do not take unilateral actions that alter the status quo until otherwise agreed
